Friendly and helpfull staff, speak english very well.

Very small room/bathroom, but if you are aware of it, its no problem at all.

    Superb

The rooms were cozy and the staff was nice. I recommend the tea and kimono ceremonies.

Not complaining really but there were no mirrors or clocks in the rooms. It would be a beneficial addition.

    The building itself is beautiful

Despite the heater being on all night it was like camping in a -20 snowstorm. Then we get to the good bit, it sounded like there was a nail factory next door which started at approximately 11 PM and continued until 8 AM when it stopped. The place seems very much like a hostel because there are notes stuck to absolutely everything, and you have to walk through a kitchen to get to your room.

    Difficult to find

    Superb

Awesome staff, lovely place, great traditional rooms...generally just what you want in a place to stay!

    Nothing really, everything was perfect!

The ryokan was run by a lovely, helpful family that spoke excellent English, which can be a rarity in Japan.

I ended up leaving the Ryokan after the second night of my five night stay. My room was right at the front of the building, surrounded by reception, communal kitchen, communal sitting room, hallway, staircase and bathroom, and so noisy I couldn't sleep. Even though I had also booked a double room, the was barely enough room for me! Not sure if I actually was in a double room. If you could get another room, I think it would be fine, but for me personally, it didn't make my stay enjoyable. I moved to a business hotel.

    Fabulous

It was great to stay in a traditional wooden house (machyia) in this beautiful historical city! The location is very convenient (in walking distance and quite easy to find from the main railway station); the room was simple, small but had everything what is needed incl. quite fast free wifi.

The only drawback of this experience in the ´machyia´ is the noise - the walls are made of the soil and tea leaves - you can practically hear every word that your neibours say (even in low voice) which is a bit disturbing.

    Japanese tranditional atmosphere.

    The room is too small.

    Exceptional

Excellent place, friendly helpful staff (speaks very good english), very good location. Rooms are very clean and tidy, we were staying in room 208, very good room, not that small, has all what you need to experience traditional japanese living. Recommend this Ryokan to everyone.

Room height not enough for standing up. No chair to sit down. No space to turn around in toilet/bath room. Taxi drivers do not know how to get there.

    Fabulous

Old japanese style, a real Ryokan as you can see on mangas. Tatamis, futons and clean rooms, laundry and all bathroom supplies ++++++++ Unbelievable staff, all great English speaking which is rare in Japan! Tea ceremony and Kimono dressing will let you fall in love with this place! 10 minutes walking from Kyoto Station and 5 minutes from bus stations.

    Fabulous

Excellent service and staff has perfect English for those of us not yet skilled in Japanese. Very good information about the city and what is happening. All around, a lovely and traditional place to stay for those who are tired of the standard impersonal chain hotels.

Takes a bit of searching to find the hotel. Best to have a small map and directions with you, but it is fun to wander the nearby streets so no big problem.

Tatami floor, House is nice but very very small room about 5 square meter with very low ceilling

Really too small room about 5 square meter with very low ceilling, we have stayed 3 nights the staff doesn't change the towels, as it's humid at this period of the year it's a bit stinking. Staff ask you 1000 Yens for key deposit kind of boring paperworks for check in ! waist of time you want to visit the city not to fill in form for key deposit come on !
